Box Heads

I spotted this image of a collection of screenshots from the book Web Design: Portfolios by Ed. Julius Wiedemann. The image consists of a collection of screenshots for the website www.h4che.com. The designs were created by Jorge Calleja. The reason why it stuck out to me is because of the odd imagery. People living normally with boxes on their heads is a strange but intriguing concept. The figures are static and frozen in a pose. It seems very spontaneous, unique, and fun. The colors are very dark with not a lot of light in the rooms. The warm colors tend to pop out however. The rest of the colors are very subdued and cold. As a whole, the website is very interesting indeed.

Rainbow Splatter

This Earth Day poster was created for USA's second national environmental event. It was intended to sell to raise funds instead of simply for display. It definitely is pleasing to the eye with the amount of colors used along with chaotic placement. I can kind of make out different images out of the random shapes, such as a flying insect, a witch's finger, flames, and an eyeball. There's a sense of movement the the curvature of the lines and the direction they flow in. It is a very fun, playful, and spontaneous piece. I also found this image in Power To The Imagination: Artists, Posters and Politics by Jürgen Döring. I would recommend any art fans to check this book out. There's a ton of great poster examples with a wide range of subject matter.

Now That's What I Call a Headache

This image has a very powerful statement. It's an antinuclear war poster published by The Swiss Conference for Peace. The imagery is has a very serious and aggressive subject matter. The infusion of the world and the skull exploding and cracking apart as a mushroom cloud appears on top shows how our world can be destroyed, and in the devastation, many people lose their lives. I love how the bold images are very dark, but they are intended to fight against and prevent nuclear war. Pinocchio, You Are a Real Boy!

This image is of course the highly recognizable, Pinocchio! This cartoon movie is one of my all-time favorite Disney films. As soon as I saw these sketches, I knew I had to write a blog post about them. Concept art is one of the most fun types of art there is, in my opinion. I get to enjoy watching other's bring their concept art sketches to life every week on the Syfy original TV series, "Face Off." I love doing concept art myself. It's very fun and invigorating to see how some basic shapes can turn into little sketches, which then morph into actual cartoons, sculptures, TV characters, etc. You can see the different expressions on Pinocchio and the different angles. Even though these are simply flat, two-dimensional drawings, they are not static whatsoever. There's a lot of movement in these pictures as Pinocchio strolls around or hops up into the air. There's a lot of joy in these images, along with an energetic and playful tone. I can't help but put a smile on my face when I look at them. I found these sketches in "Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life" by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston.
